Vincent Garnier and Stephane Jacquemin from Costa Rica Backpackers

THE STORY OF COSTA RICA BACKPACKERS
It all started in Cairns, Australia. Vincent was working at a backpackers, back in 1995 and decided he wanted the owners job! He loved the atmosphere of the place, and realised how much he would enjoy the same way of life. Few months later he stopped over in Costa Rica on his way to Peru, and realised he may just have found the spot he was looking for... Back in Paris, he teamed up with his friend Stephane, and they spent the next three years saving every penny in order to head to Costa Rica and take a chance on opening a backpackers hostel. They arrived in Costa Rica in 2000 and spent time getting to know the country and the language, before eventually finding the right property and opening the first backpackers in the country, on October 21st 2001.  They only had enough money to keep the place running for a few months, so were delighted when the place became an immediate success!  The backpackers phenomenon quickly spread all over Costa Rica, with locals and foreigners alike opening up new places. Vincent and Stephane are pleased that their venture worked, and love to see how the standard of accommodation for the budget traveler has improved all over the country. They have enjoyed getting to know Costa Rica and its people, and the many travelers who pass through their door...

WHAT THE GUIDE BOOKS SAY?

LONELY PLANET 2008. This long-standing favourite is a place to stay with two faces. Party-people live it up in the main section of the hostel, while the vibe is more low-key in the guesthouse wing across the road. By day, all lounge in hammocks and chat around the pool in the manicured garden. The main draw here is the idyllic garden-set swimming pool, around which guests splash away the day, sunbathing and swapping travelling tales, while mellow tunes resonate. Over the road, in the recently converted hundred-year-old guesthouse, the pace is a little slower, where folk make the most of the large double rooms and peaceful reading areas

This was one of the nicest and funniest hostels we've ever been to: great bar, good restaurant, fun social atmosphere, helpful staff, and convenient location. Everything's within walking distance-museums, atm, supermarket, etc.
Chill out atmosphere. the rooms are clean and simple, there are hammocks around the kitchen and pool area which is great for chilling out. they have a restaurant which serves decent food.

Neat location and atmosphere, A nice place to stay while in San Jose. Great location-close to a lot of great attractions. A great atmosphere if you're looking to meet cool people and relax in a fun environment.
